The average person encounters latches every day. From the magnetic handle that opens a kitchen cabinet door to the latch that releases a car hatchback door, latches are everywhere. Simply put, a latch is a fastening device that connects two surfaces together while still allowing or restricting access to the inside of an enclosure.
Latch Types
Latch complexity varies widely, depending on the application goals. A variety of latches are available to meet the needs of different applications.
The cam latch is a simple, cost-effective type of latch. It is also a hatch lock for motorhomesand is a high security, environmentally adapted speciality lock. Core functions: single-opening (individually keyed) or through-opening KA/KD (master key controls multiple locks). This type of latch consists of a body that is normally attached to a moving panel or door and contains a cam lever that rotates to engage a non-moving or fixed panel. Once the door is closed, the cam rotates behind the fixed panel to secure the moving panel or door. The cam lever is actuated by a simple twisting or turning motion, either by hand or tool. A locking mechanism can be integrated into the head style for added security. Cam levers are commonly used to close and secure cabinet doors as well as many other enclosures. Cam latches are usually available in different materials, including stainless steel and zinc.
Push to Close / Slam Latch
Push to close latches hold a door or panel securely in place by simply pushing the door open. This type of latch is also known as a ‘slam latch’ because of its innate ability to resist any damage when the door or panel slams shut. Unlike some other latches, there is no need to turn the handle to engage the latch. CORE FUNCTION : Automatic latching/opening by pressing on the door panel without the need for a key or external handle
The working principle of the Slam Latch is simple. The latch is attached to a swinging door or panel and consists of a body and a spring loaded cam. When the panel or door is closed, the cam is either pushed into the mating surface or hooks over the firing pin. The cam will then spring back behind the mating surface or lock around the firing pin to secure the panel or door in place.
Keylocks can be integrated into the slam latch to provide additional security. A slam latch will lock into place when closed and may require activation of a lever, handle or trigger to open the latch. Some other types of slam latches require only the opposite force to overload the friction holding the latch in place.
Slam latches are ideal for equipment where locking reliability is critical, such as industrial equipment, construction and transportation applications. Slam latches are available in a variety of materials including plastic, steel and stainless steel, zinc plate, zinc-nickel plate, and powder coated finishes. They are available in surface and flush panel mounting, snap-in and adhesive mounting styles, as well as locking and non-locking grip styles, including lift paddle, handle pull, push button, knob pull, finger slide and squeeze handle. Commercial walk-in refrigerators and car doors are two examples of real-world applications where push-button latches are commonly used.
